Financial Times: India may cut import tariffs on electric cars at Tesla’s request

As specified in the newspaper, the management of Tesla appealed to the Indian authorities with a request for initial tariff relief, which would allow the American carmaker to compensate for the existing in India 70 per cent customs duty for cars costing less than 40 thousand dollars and 100 per cent duty for more expensive cars.

Recall, American billionaire and Tesla CEO Ilon Musk has previously repeatedly announced the company’s plans to enter the Indian market, as well as to launch the production of electric cars in India. In February 2021, the government of the Indian state of Karnataka even confirmed the construction of a Tesla plant. Nevertheless, the subsequent attempts of the American company to achieve a reduction in duty on imports of electric cars to India did not find support from the local authorities.
