India may reduce import tariffs on imported electric cars in connection with Tesla’s plans to build a plant on the territory of the South Asian republic. This is according to the Financial Times, citing a source in the Indian government.
“They (Tesla – note) need some tariff relief, at least in the interim period,” – quotes the comment of the source Financial Times.
As it is specified, in a sense, New Delhi’s potential decision in this regard could be a precondition for the construction of a Tesla plant in India. Meanwhile, a 15 per cent tariff reduction for electric vehicles of all categories is being considered at this stage.
“We would like to come up with a solution that will be beneficial to India as a whole, which will not be a special measure taken for one company. This will be available to other firms as well, provided certain requirements are met,” a source told the publication in a follow-up.
